HARRISBURG – A resolution introduced by Reps. Jim Gregory (R-Blair) and Perry Warren (D-Bucks) passed the House on Monday to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Slinky toy in 2020.
“So many children across the world have enjoyed playing with Slinky. It is a simple concept that provides great entertainment, and I’m so proud it is produced today in Blair County,” Gregory said.
In 1945, Slinky was first introduced to Christmas shoppers at the Gimbels department store in Philadelphia. James Industries built a factory to manufacture the toy in suburban Philadelphia and later moved its headquarters to Hollidaysburg.
Today, leading toy company Just Play owns the Slinky brand and is reopening the manufacturing plant in Hollidaysburg.
Slinky, part of the National Toy Hall of Fame, has a storied position as one of the country’s favorite toys. It was even demonstrated on the Discovery Space Shuttle in 1985.
Just Play’s co-presidents, Geoffrey Greenberg and Charlie Emby, say they intend to continue creating Slinky for many years to come.
House Resolution 959 passed unanimously.
