HARRISBURG – The House today approved legislation, which includes a measure to create a statewide commerce court. Rep. Seth Grove (R-Dover), who authored the bill to create the business court, issued the following statement:
“I applaud the House for once again moving this initiative forward, and thank Sen. Mike Regan of York and Cumberland counties for having the foresight to allow my commerce court bill to be amended into his Senate Bill 976 to codify Veterans Courts in Pennsylvania.
“My commerce court legislation builds on more than a decade of success of Philadelphia’s Commerce Case Management Program. The program has gained a reputation for its effective, efficient and predictable rulings on complex business cases. With the success of the program there, it makes perfect sense to expand it to include the entire Commonwealth.”
Grove’s
House Bill 332 would allow the state Supreme Court to create Commerce Courts in counties across the state, which provides uniformity when intricate business legal matters are brought before the courts. These programs have judges dedicated to hearing and deciding business-related cases. The specialized courts would handle complex business cases, including acquisitions, mergers, dissolutions and liquidations, among other items.
The House Judiciary Committee amended Grove’s legislation into
Senate Bill 976, which was approved by the House today. In addition to codifying Veterans Courts into law, the bill would allow Veterans Courts to permit participation by veterans from adjacent counties and allow county Common Pleas Courts that have other problem-solving courts to establish “Veterans Tracks,” which are programs that utilize some components of a Veterans Court. It is now before the full Senate for a vote.
