HARRISBURG – Legislation co-sponsored by Rep. Tim Bonner (R-Mercer/Butler) that will freeze Cost of Living Adjustments (COLAs) for state government officials beginning Dec. 1, 2020 through Nov. 30, 2021, has been signed into law by the governor.
House Bill 2487, which received unanimous approval in both the House and Senate, will freeze pay increases for members of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, the governor, lieutenant governor, treasurer, attorney general, auditor general, the heads of departments, members of boards and commissions, and the judiciary. Earlier this year, the House Republican Caucus placed a freeze on hiring and froze employee salaries for one year.
“A pay freeze for elected officials and others in state government is necessary and appropriate in these troubled economic times,” said Bonner. “The state is facing a $4.6 billion revenue shortfall this year due to the governor’s shutdown of the economy in response to the pandemic. This is a small but important sacrifice made by the officials of this state recognizing the heavy burden imposed upon the citizens of Pennsylvania. However, we still have much work to do to restore the economic vibrancy of our state.”
