CAMP HILL – State Rep. Greg Rothman (R-Cumberland) recently introduced legislation that would help American military veterans and reservists start and grow small businesses in Pennsylvania.
“This bill would create jobs for American workers by providing entrepreneurial support to the men and women who defended our nation,” Rothman said. “Many of the men and women who serve or served in our armed forces have the skills, discipline and ambition necessary to run a successful business.”
Rothman’s bill would establish a network of centers across the Commonwealth to help veterans start and run small businesses with up to 100 employees.
The centers would be located on Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education university campuses or at community colleges.
The centers would help veterans develop business plans; acquire startup capital and credit; create marketing plans; compete for government contracts; learn how to negotiate; and develop additional skills and abilities necessary to succeed as a small business owner.
In addition to traditional business support services, the centers also would help members of military reserve units prepare their business for times when the owner is away on active duty.
“I envision the centers as one-stop shops tailored specifically to the unique needs of veterans and reservists looking to start a business,” Rothman said.
Rothman knows about military service and running a business from personal experience. He served nearly 10 years in the Marine Corps Reserve, rising to the rank of staff sergeant before being honorably discharged in 2001. He was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve on the National Veterans Business Development Corporation board to encourage veterans to start entrepreneurial ventures. Rothman currently serves as president and CEO of RSR REALTORS.
Rothman’s bill has been referred to the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee.
