HARRISBURG – An idea included in legislation introduced by Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon) that would require all publicly funded recovery houses to keep Narcan on-site, has been implemented through the regulatory process. The proposal was brought to the attention of Pennsylvania Secretary of Drug and Alcohol Programs Gary Tennis and has been recommended to the state’s recovery houses.
“Earlier this session, I was contacted by a father who lost his daughter as a result of a drug overdose in a recovery house. The product of that conversation was House Bill 2128, which passed out of the House Human Services Committee last month,” said Heffley. “We need to support those who have made the decision to improve their lives and the recovery facilities should be giving these individuals the necessary tools to overcome their addiction. I am pleased that an idea which has the potential to save lives is being implemented in an expedited manner.”
House Bill 2128 would require all publicly funded recovery houses to keep Narcan on-site and would also require that the facility have trained individuals on staff who could administer the medication.
A number of recovery houses have already begun to stock Narcan for use in the event of an accidental overdose.
