HARRISBURG – The House of Representatives today approved a $31.63 billion state budget, which increases spending by nearly 5 percent and raises a variety of taxes.

Following the vote, Rep. Ryan Warner (R-Fayette/Westmoreland) issued this statement:

“Instead of getting to the root of our spending problem, politicians, yet again, have chosen quick fixes and raising taxes to plug the holes of a bloated budget proposal. I am very disappointed.

“This is the wrong direction for Pennsylvania and will not result in prosperity. We shouldn’t be raising taxes and growing government, we should be working to create a better job climate for Pennsylvania, ensuring a more efficient government for our taxpayers, lowering taxes on working people, reducing burdensome regulations on small businesses, targeting wasteful spending, and requiring personal responsibility.

“But rather than make the tough choices, we continue to make excuses that kick the can down the road. Once again we go back to the taxpayers for more money, yet we put no plan in place to slow down this out-of-control spending train for future generations.

“Where does it end? Where are the long-term strategies? We need to remember that what we spend and borrow today will be on our children and grandchildren to pay. Pennsylvanians cannot afford a government that spends like there is no tomorrow.”

Warner is the prime sponsor of House Bill 472, which would amend the Pennsylvania Constitution to establish spending limits that the Commonwealth must abide by each fiscal year. The proposed constitutional amendment would limit the rate at which the Commonwealth’s spending may increase, based on either the Consumer Price Index or a change in population.
