HARRISBURG – State Rep. Will Tallman (R-Adams/Cumberland) joined members of the York County House Republican delegation and House members on both sides of the aisle in standing in opposition to Senate Bill 1073, the key piece in the package of legislation that forms the 2016-17 state budget. If approved by the state Senate, the bill will require $31.5 billion in spending, a more than $1.4 billion increase over the 2015-16 fiscal year.

Tallman issued the following statement in reaction to passage of the bill, which will now be taken up by the Senate:

“Any household that spends more money than it takes in can be considered irresponsible. The people’s ‘household’ in Harrisburg is guilty of the same transgression if this budget bill becomes law.

“Senate Bill 1073 calls for spending 4.8 percent more of Pennsylvanians hard-earned dollars than in 2015-16. A year ago, the majority of the General Assembly opposed a spending increase that was much less than that figure.

“Residents in the 193rd Legislative District are still waiting on property tax relief. Harrisburg’s answer is to spend more of their money through reliance on liquor reform, expanded gaming and increased cigarette taxes – revenue streams that are expected to produce amounts of money I feel are overestimated.

“The hole we would be putting ourselves in if this spending plan becomes law will need to be filled by some sort of significant tax increase next year at this time. I’m hoping my Senate colleagues see it this way and make adjustments accordingly.”
