HARRISBURG – Rep. Ryan Warner (R-Fayette/Westmoreland) issued the following statement in response to the $31.55 billion state budget approved today by the House of Representatives:
“Government has a spending addiction that needs to be cut off. It should operate no differently than the household budgets of those it serves. When things get tight, government should be looking for ways to cut costs and eliminate waste and inefficiencies. Instead, as a state and a country, we keep doing what we always do: we spend more taxpayer dollars and continue to grow government. When is enough, enough?
“The state budget put before us today simply spends too much and does not do enough to control costs. It increases the price of state government by nearly 5 percent at a time when inflation is estimated to be 1 percent. I cannot justify that large of an increase in spending.
“It is my opinion that this budget is not the best we could have done for the taxpayers of this Commonwealth. We need to remember that what we spend and borrow today will be on our children and grandchildren to pay. Pennsylvanians cannot afford a government that spends like there is no tomorrow.”
Warner is the prime sponsor of
House Bill 472, which would amend the Pennsylvania Constitution to establish spending limits that the Commonwealth must abide by each fiscal year. The proposed constitutional amendment would limit the rate at which the Commonwealth’s spending may increase, based on either the Consumer Price Index or a change in population.
