HARRISBURG – Continuing efforts to be responsible and good stewards of taxpayer dollars, and to ensure every cent is wisely spent, the House today approved House Bill 39, authored by Rep. Seth Grove (R-Dover).

The legislation calls for the Office the Budget to conduct recovery audits on expenditures that total $50 million or more to weed out misspending.

“Recovery audits are nothing new and were first introduced in the retail industry in the 1970s. Since then, the federal government and other states have implemented this cost-saving practice.” Grove said. “It is simply commonsense to conduct regular recovery audits across the board within state government. Doing so would better protect taxpayer dollars, prevent fraud and uncover government waste.”

Specifically, House Bill 39 directs the Office of the Budget to establish a review schedule of all Commonwealth agencies that have $50 million or more in payments to individuals, vendors or entities for improper payments and payment recovery by contracting with an auditor to perform a recovery audit.

The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.
