Vows to continue fight into fall session
HARRISBURG -- Rep. Marguerite Quinn (R-Bucks) issued the following statement regarding the status of her
House Bill 2060, which did not come before the full House for a vote today:
“I’m committed to securing a vote on House Bill 2060. I’m disappointed that, despite being on our voting schedule, the House recessed before taking up this important measure.
“House Bill 2060 is a domestic violence bill with a firearm component. It will save lives once enacted. Despite claims to the contrary by a firearms group that was neutral on the bill -- until hours before the vote when they came out against it -- the legislation will not take firearms away from responsible gun owners. It will, when enacted, take firearms out of the hands of those who are violent, and proven to be a threat to their family.
“Under the bill, firearms relinquishment would take place in the case of a conviction for a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, when the defendant has been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. In the case of a civil order, which would be a Protection From Abuse (PFA), a judge would order the relinquishment of firearms after a hearing, at which evidence is presented and both parties have a chance to speak.
“This bill has so much support from so many organizations that are with us in our fight, including law enforcement and victim advocacy groups.
“I am confident that in the end, reason will prevail and House Bill 2060 will become law.”
The bill was reported from the House Judiciary Committee by a vote of 21-6 and out of the House Appropriations Committee by a vote of 35-0.
