HARRISBURG – Rep. Gary W. Day (R-Lehigh/Berks), chairman of the House Aging and Older Adults Services Committee, held a public hearing with the Pennsylvania Life Provider Alliance (PALPA) to discuss the Living Independence for the Elderly Program (LIFE) in Pennsylvania.
The public hearing allowed members of the committee to hear alternative options available for older Pennsylvanians who may be nursing-home eligible. Mark Irwin, acting PALPA chair and COO of Senior LIFE; Silvia Boswell, COO of the eastern region of InnovAge; and Joann Grego, CEO of LIFE Pittsburgh presented on what the LIFE program has to offer throughout the Commonwealth.
“To continue the momentum our committee has had during Elder Abuse Awareness Month, we held a public hearing today to give the committee insight on options that offer our seniors and older Pennsylvanians more than a typical nursing home facility when they become eligible,” said Day. “We have seen here today through the Living Independence for the Elderly Program we have in Pennsylvania, these Senior LIFE centers do just that. When I had the ability to tour one of their facilities, right in my back yard in Berks County and one in Lehigh County, a few weeks ago, I was able to see the care and services they offer firsthand. These facilities have done their best during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide the utmost care for our seniors during these difficult times we have all faced. The LIFE program allows seniors to stay in their home, provides comprehensive services and costs less. It is imperative as legislators we continue to work to make programs like this better and not allow bureaucracy to get in the way of taking care of our seniors, older adults and care-dependent individuals.”
