HARRISBURG – Rep. Joshua Kail (R-Beaver/Washington) joined the majority of his colleagues from the House of Representatives in voting in favor of
House Bill 1300, known as the Voting Rights Protection Act.
The bill modernizes the Pennsylvania Election Code while fixing serious issues and maintaining voter integrity. It would tighten security by expanding upon the Commonwealth’s current voter identification law, requiring election audits, creating uniformity across all 67 counties as required by the Pennsylvania Constitution, strengthening certification processes for machines used in elections, requiring signature verification for mail-in and absentee ballots, refining lists of registered voters and more.
“In order for the public to regain trust in the election system, changes were needed,” Kail said. “This bill addresses the glaring issues. All 67 counties will operate the same way, which is important to ensure election integrity.”
Under House Bill 1300, the existing voter registration card would be enhanced for in-person voting. The deadline to register to vote would shift from 15 days to 30 days before Election Day, which gives counties more time to process the applications among other things.
“Counties need time to prepare for an upcoming election,” Kail said. “If counties are able to carry out elections with no hiccups, everyone is better off for it.”
The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.
