HARRISBURG – The state House today in Harrisburg voted to approve a comprehensive election reform bill co-sponsored by state Rep. Ann Flood (R-Northampton). The bill aims to make it easier for legal voters to cast their ballots, protect the integrity of the election process and enhance public confidence in election results.
“We want to ensure elections are fair and the outcomes reflect the will of the people who legally cast their ballots,” Flood said. “This has been one of the top issues for people I’ve talked with in our district since I took office back in January.”
The legislation would establish a voter’s bill of rights, which would, among other things, allow senior citizen voters age 70 or older and disabled voters to move to the front of the line upon arrival at a polling place.
The bill also sets an aggressive goal of ensuring no voter in Pennsylvania will have to wait longer than 30 minutes in line to cast his or her ballot.
“Our bill would allow older Pennsylvanians to move to the front of the line and everyone else would be able to vote in less time than it takes to order a pizza,” Flood said.
The bill would establish an enhanced identification system requiring voters to provide one of many acceptable forms of ID, including the voter registration card issued free of charge by the county board of elections.
The bill also would create more secure mail-in and absentee voting systems. Applicants for mail-in and absentee ballots would have to provide the last four digits of their Social Security number and their full Pennsylvania driver’s license number, or one of those two in addition to their voter registration number.
“Many voters were very upset after the 2020 election and they want lawmakers to take steps to enhance public trust in the electoral system,” Flood said. “People want to know for sure that the person in office is the one who legitimately won the election.”
House Bill 1300 now heads to the state Senate for consideration.
