HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania’s parents should have decision-making power in the educational opportunities for their children, including access to the state funding that currently goes directly to public schools, Rep. Andrew Lewis (R-Dauphin) said today at a press conference highlighting
House Bill 1.
Lewis sponsored House Bill 1, which is called the Excellent Education for All Act, to allow the roughly $6,000 the state pays per pupil to be placed into a scholarship account for that child, rather than going directly to the public school district in which the family resides. This program, called the “Keystone Hope Scholarship,” would assist families who choose to homeschool students or enroll them in charter, private or parochial schools.
“Pennsylvania is fortunate to have fantastic schools that come in different forms. If passed into law, House Bill 1 would give families access to scholarships that give them more options,” Lewis said.
In addition to creating the Keystone Hope Scholarship program, House Bill 1 would expand existing tax credit scholarship programs, reform and innovate charter schools, and protect coronavirus learning pods that grew in popularity as the COVID-19 pandemic progressed.
House Bill 1 was referred to the House Education Committee. Lewis encourages swift review of the legislation in committee so that it can be brought to the full House for a vote.
