BRIDGEVILLE – Rep. Jason Ortitay (R-Washington/Allegheny) thanked the House State Government Committee for coming to South Fayette Township today to gather input from area residents on the important topic of congressional redistricting.

“The House State Government Committee is committed to an open and transparent process as we work to create new congressional maps based on 2020 census data,” Ortitay said. “I appreciate the committee coming to my district to hear directly from my constituents and nearby Commonwealth residents. The testimony given today will help guide us as we move forward. With Pennsylvania losing a congressional seat due to faster growth in other parts of the country, all district lines will have to change to absorb this decrease. It is imperative to get it right.”

Every 10 years, information collected through the U.S. Census determines the number of U.S. Representatives each state is entitled based on population. Once in receipt of that data, states are responsible for redrawing the geographic area of their congressional districts to ensure equal and fair representation, and the physical manifestation of the constitutional principle, “one person, one vote.” This process is commonly referred to as redistricting.

At Wednesday’s hearing 17 people spoke. For those still interested in providing input, written testimony can be submitted until Wednesday, Oct. 13, by visiting PaRedistricting.com.

The hearing is one of eight being held throughout the state to gather input from Pennsylvania residents.

The 46th Legislative District includes Collier and South Fayette townships and Bridgeville, Heidelberg, McDonald and Oakdale boroughs in Allegheny County. It also encompasses Canton, Cecil, Mt. Pleasant, Robinson and Smith townships and Burgettstown, McDonald and Midway boroughs in Washington County.
