HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Wolf’s announcement today that masks will be required in pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade classrooms inappropriately yanks decision-making power from the school board members chosen by and accountable to local voters, according to Rep. John Hershey (R-Mifflin/Juniata/Franklin).
“The governor is once again choosing executive overreach instead of trusting school boards to determine what is best for the classrooms in the communities they serve. The needs of Pennsylvanians in Mifflin, Juniata and Franklin counties differ from those in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia,” Hershey said. “Not only have educators had access to COVID-19 vaccines for more than seven months, but those same vaccines are readily available to older children who are learning in the very classrooms where the governor now says they must wear masks.”
Hershey questioned how Wolf determined he has authority for the new mask mandate, considering the governor just last week called for a special session of the Legislature on the matter.
“Residents of the 82nd District can rest assured I will be joining GOP leadership in the House and Senate in pushing back on this measure,” Hershey said.
