HARRISBURG – Rep. Matthew Dowling (R-Fayette/Somerset) issued the following statement Tuesday in response to the announcement by Gov. Tom Wolf and Secretary of Health Alison Beam that all students, staff and faculty in K-12 schools, early learning and child care centers.

“Without a doubt, we ALL want to do what is best for our children, to keep them safe and healthy and provide them with the best possible learning opportunities. As recently as a few weeks ago, we were all on the same page with leaving these decisions up to our local elected school district officials. They live, work and raise their kids in our communities and are therefore in the best position to know what is needed in their schools and what is best for their students and staff.

“Sadly, the governor just can’t help himself and has again overstepped his authority by issuing this mandate. Back in May, the voters sent a clear message when they approved constitutional amendments to limit the governor’s emergency declaration powers. Instead of listening to the voters, he’s using the loophole provided by the Disease Prevention and Control Law to force his will on students across the state.”
