HARRISBURG – Rep. Jerry Knowles (R-Schuylkill/Berks/Carbon), majority chairman of the House Local Government Committee, held a joint public hearing with the House and Senate Local Government committees today.
The purpose of the bipartisan public hearing was to discuss the positive experiences that local government entities have faced during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“Throughout my district and across Pennsylvania, we saw that our local municipalities were able to adapt to the adversities that the COVID-19 pandemic had thrown at them,” said Knowles. “One of the big takeaways was that we saw many local governments begin to function virtually and hold many meetings remotely with upgrades in technology. This meeting gave us a better picture of what may be necessary changes through legislation at the state level. I was glad to be able to work with my counterparts in the House and Senate to bring this together, so that we can provide every resource possible to our local governments to help them succeed.”
The testifiers included David Greene, executive director, Local Government Commission; Kristopher Gazsi, counsel, Local Government Commission; Amy Struges, director of governmental affairs, Pennsylvania State Association of Township Commissioners and the Pennsylvania Municipal League; Joseph Gerdes, director of government relations, Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors; Scott Bomboy, Perkasie Borough councilman, Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs; Kevin Boozel, president, County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania; Matt Lentz, executive board member, Government Finance Officers Association; and Logan Timmerhoff, senior associate, Pew Chartiable Trust.
