HARRISBURG – In order to move Pennsylvania’s liquor laws into the 21st century and to provide convenience to consumers, Rep. Craig Staats (R-Bucks) voted in favor of
House Bill 1690, which would permit the sale of wine in grocery stores, increase opportunities for the sale of beer, and improve customer convenience for overall liquor sales.
This legislation is expected to provide $150 million in revenue, which will be critical as the Legislature works to complete the 2016-17 budget by June 30.
“This is the most significant step in the process of modernizing Pennsylvanian’s archaic liquor laws since the 1930s. These measures will increase convenience for our consumers and provide necessary revenue. We had a chance to be a part of history and I am proud to have voted for this legislation,” he said.
House Bill 1690 will also require a comprehensive study of the valuation of the state store system and various proposals to fully privatize liquor sales in the future.
Gov. Tom Wolf will sign the legislation later today.
