HARRISBURG – The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) has recognized Rep. Marcy Toepel (R- Montgomery) as a recipient of the Women in Politics Making a Difference Award for her impact in the 147th District, as well as in the legislature.
“Thanks to Peggy Lee-Clark, who nominated me for this award. I have enjoyed working with her and assistant professor of political science Jodie Empol Schwartz to bring young women to Harrisburg through Montgomery County Community College’s student shadowing program,” Toepel said.
The shadowing program provides local college students with the opportunity to interact with legislators and other people who work in the Capitol. It focuses on what it means to be a successful female in public service and how the powerful women who are currently serving the House of Representatives have impacted the Commonwealth.
Students in the program have participated in a working lunch with female staff members and Montgomery County representatives: Kate Harper (R-Montgomery), Pam DeLissio (D-Montgomery/Philadelphia), Madeleine Dean (D-Montgomery) and Mary Jo Daly (D-Montgomery). They also received a behind-the-scenes tour of the Capitol as well as observed committee meetings and the House while in session.
“A day in Harrisburg complements the students’ classroom learning and adds another dimension to their educational experience,” Toepel added. “It has been a pleasure to host these important shadowing days, and I look forward to continuing to partner with Montgomery County Community College for the benefit of the program.”
