HARRISBURG – Legislation designed to protect voters’ rights and assist poll workers when conducting smoother, fairer elections emerged from the House State Government Committee this week, according to Rep. Jim Gregory (R-Blair).
Gregory praised the concepts contained in
House Bill 1800, which is known as the Voting Rights Protection Act.
Among those provisions are requirements for regular election audits; enhanced certification processes for machines; and new, scannable voter registration cards. The bill would regulate mail-in ballot drop boxes.
“I’m grateful my colleague, Seth Grove, took on the hard work of conducting 10 hearings in the State Government Committee and crafting the Voting Rights Protection Act, which would modernize and secure future elections. I urge swift action on this bill in the full House. Passing House Bill 1800 can and hopefully will bring voter confidence for 2022,” Gregory said.
Gregory said increased access and security at the polls would restore faith in elections.
Earlier this year, Gov. Tom Wolf vetoed similar legislation, House Bill 1300. Grove reintroduced his bill after the governor remarked he believes there is a need for enhanced voter identification requirements.
