HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania House Majority Leader Kerry Benninghoff (R-Centre/Mifflin) voted at Monday’s meeting of the Legislative Reapportionment Commission against certifying the data affected by recently adopted prisoner reallocation proposals that will be used for state legislative redistricting.
Following the meeting, Benninghoff released the following statement:
“For much of our preliminary work, I have been complimentary of the commission in meeting the standard of having a fair, open and legal state redistricting process. This has truly been the most transparent redistricting processes in the history of Pennsylvania.
“Unfortunately, the commission’s work has recently become less focused on meeting the constitutional requirements for legislative districts and, instead, has become focused on extraconstitutional concerns that have now resulted in some legislators picking their constituents through prisoner reallocation and the realistic potential that we will be forced to move back the date of the 2022 Primary Election. That is why I voted ‘No’ on Resolution 6A.
“I hope we can find common ground on more issues as this commission continues its work. However, the manner by how we arrived at the data before us today has been frustrating in its lack of focus on constitutional standards and the difficult timing decisions now ahead of us.”
