HARRISBURG – On Wednesday,
House Bill 1733, sponsored by Rep. Brian Smith (R-Jefferson/Indiana), to bring parity to Wine Expanded Permits (WEPS) and uniform hours for the sale of wine was reported out of the House Liquor Control Committee by a party line vote of 14-10.
“As an uncompromising proponent of free enterprise and liquor privatization, I am always supportive of removing prohibition-style government obstacles to generate greater competition and increased value in the marketplace,” said Smith, who also serves as a member of the House Liquor Control Committee. “My legislation would successfully allow WEP licensees to sell wine for off-premise consumption until 2 a.m.—the same as retail hours for the sale of malt and brewed beverages. This commonsense change would give customers, who often pick up beer later in the evening, the added convenience of purchasing wine at the same location after the current cutoff time of 11 p.m.”
The House Liquor Control Committee is responsible for issues relating to the administration of alcoholic beverage licenses and the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages, as well as continued efforts to boost consumer convenience.
House Bill 1733 now advances to the full House for consideration.
