HARRISBURG – Continuing efforts to increase trust in our election processes and outcomes from all voters in Pennsylvania, legislation authored by Speaker Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster) that would require audits of election results at the state and county levels for all future elections passed a House State Government Committee vote today.
“If people cannot trust in our process it makes it much more difficult for the public to trust in the outcomes,” Cutler said. “This bill would ensure all voters know their vote was counted accurately, securely and in a timely manner. These are simple goals to ensure our elections are as transparent as possible.”
Cutler has consistently pushed for enhanced post-election reports and audits. After the 2020 primary, Cutler supported legislation requiring a Department of State report that provided in-depth details into the impacts of the changes the Legislature and Gov. Tom Wolf made in election law. That bill that passed the Legislature with widespread bipartisan support, and was signed into law.
“The vote today is a vote in favor of the same transparency as the 2020 bill,” Cutler added. “Making sure we have all the information allows lawmakers to make the best decisions in the future to improve our election processes for all Pennsylvanians.”
House Bill 1482 does not include any directives to audit any previous elections and would apply to future elections in Pennsylvania.
“Our caucus has consistently led the way in taking steps to make our elections more open, transparent and secure,” Cutler said. “This bill is one more piece of that work, and I thank the members for their support.”
The bill now awaits further consideration before the full House.
