HARRISBURG – Legislation sponsored by Rep. Jack Rader (R-Monroe) that would provide an estate tax exemption for military members in Pennsylvania today was unanimously advanced by the House Finance Committee.

Specifically, House Bill 1342 would provide an exemption from the Inheritance Tax for property that is transferred from the estate of a military member who has died as a result of an injury or illness suffered while serving on active duty.

“Our military members are true heroes. When the unthinkable happens, a tremendous void is left in the lives of their families. Not only must they deal with the pain; there may be tax liabilities as well,” said Rader. “My legislation would help during this difficult time by alleviating an unnecessary financial burden and allow the family to mourn rather than worry about a tax liability.”

House Bill 1342 will next be considered by the full House.
