HARRISBURG – A measure to allow students to drive tractors to school in conjunction with agriculture-education programs passed the House today, according to the bill’s sponsor, Rep. John Hershey (R-Mifflin/Juniata/Franklin).
House Bill 122 would exempt tractors and similar farm equipment from vehicle registration requirements if they are driven to a school less than 25 miles away. It would allow for students ages 14 and older to operate the tractor on the way to and from school.
“Ag education and the National FFA Organization played a huge role in my formative years. The occasional opportunity to take a tractor to school can help students with learning about the machinery, while also helping to foster pride in Pennsylvania’s agricultural history and future,” Hershey said.
Farm equipment being driven on roads to or from school must not be longer than 11 feet in length and all transporting must be done between sunrise and sunset under the legislation introduced by Hershey, who is a member of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee.
House Bill 122 goes to the Senate for its consideration.
