HARRISBURG – Rep. Carl Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford) issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed legislation to uphold the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens.

“Article One, Section 21 of the Pennsylvania Constitution states, ‘The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the state shall not be questioned.’ Begging the government for permission to conceal a firearm is infringement, and it is unconstitutional. Today, we voted to lift this restriction, and I am proud to have supported this effort.

“Law-abiding, legal gunowners in Pennsylvania can already open-carry firearms without a permit. Therefore, the only change would be to give legal gun owners the option to carry concealed without a permit. Currently, 21 other states have already implemented this with little to no issues, giving us at least 21 reasons why we needed to hop on board with the same standards.

“The legislation we passed is the only reasonable way to ensure every Pennsylvanian can carry legally without government intrusion. I am pleased to see many of my colleagues join me in this fight to do just that.”
