HARRISBURG – Legislation sponsored by Rep. Jack Rader (R-Monroe) that would provide an estate tax exemption for military members in Pennsylvania was passed unanimously in the House of Representatives on Monday.

Specifically, House Bill 1342 would provide an exemption from the Inheritance Tax for property that is transferred from the estate of a military member who has died as a result of an injury or illness suffered while serving on active duty in the armed forces, a reserve component or the National Guard.

“I am grateful to my House colleagues for their unanimous support of this important piece of legislation,” said Rader. “When the unthinkable occurs, the families of deceased military members should not be burdened with tax liabilities during the grieving process. Our military members risk their lives to protect the freedoms that we all enjoy, and there is no question this tax exemption is something their loved ones deserve.”

House Bill 1342 now goes to the Senate for consideration.
