Mar. 17, 2016
HARRISBURG — Rep. David Millard (R-Berwick) today voted to restore Gov. Tom Wolf’s devastating cuts to education and agriculture, and close out the 2015-16 state budget without any tax increases. The supplemental budget,
House Bill 1801, represents a 3 percent overall increase from 2014-15.
Millard made the following statement after the vote:
“The plan I supported today restores the billions in education, agriculture and other funding cut by Gov. Wolf’s veto in December. The supplemental budget closes out this year’s budget by spending only the dollars we have to spend, and does not require any new or increased taxes.
“In addition to restoring cuts, the budget invests an additional $200 million in education and provides a 5 percent increase in funding the state’s higher education institutions. Also critically important, the plan restores the governor’s cuts to agriculture funding, including his cuts to agricultural research, which put an estimated 1,100 jobs at risk and threatened to end 4-H.
“The supplemental budget is a fair compromise. It does not reflect everything that everyone wants, on either side of the aisle, but time is of the essence. It is well beyond time to drive out vital funds to local schools, universities and hospitals, close the books and move on to negotiating next year’s budget.”
