HARRISBURG – Today Rep. Adam Harris (R-Franklin/Juniata/Mifflin) voted to reverse Gov. Tom Wolf’s budget cuts and restore vital funding for important programs, services and industries. The supplemental budget he supports would spend $30 billion and would not require any new taxes.
“Rather than focusing on our state agricultural programs and the many other important items that require funding, Wolf has made numerous budget cuts in an attempt to achieve the largest tax increase in the United States,” Harris said. “Today, for the third time, I have voted to fund these vital programs; I remain hopeful that partisan politics will become secondary to serving the needs of our citizens.”
House Bill 1801 would restore millions of dollars that Gov. Tom Wolf cut from higher education in the Commonwealth, including for community colleges and the State System of Higher Education. It also fully funds the University of Pittsburgh, Temple University, Lincoln University and Pennsylvania State University – providing a 5 percent increase for the institutions over what was allocated the previous fiscal year.
“The many conversations I have had with Commonwealth residents during budget negotiations have underscored the significance of a top state industry: agriculture,” Harris said. “Surely the governor has also heard how necessary it is to keep our agricultural extensions open and 4-H active.”
By funding Penn State, the agricultural extension currently in danger of closing will remain open. Through this county-based partnership, educators, faculty and local volunteers work together to share unbiased, research-based information with people of the Commonwealth. Topics covered by the extension include diet and health; parenting skills; gardening and landscaping; and increasing profitability.
Since
House Bill 1801 passed on concurrence in the House, it now goes to the governor for consideration. For more information on the budget, please visit
