HARRISBURG – In an effort to complete the 2015-16 state budget on Wednesday, Rep. Lynda Schlegel Culver (R-Northumberland/Snyder) voted in favor of a budget plan that would reverse many of the vetoes that the governor made last year. This was the House of Representatives’ fourth attempt to implement a complete state budget.
“The plan we voted on today seeks to complete the 2015-16 state budget,” Culver said. “It would undo many of the governor’s funding vetoes, which totaled more than $6 billion. My colleagues and I in the Legislature have been working to finish this budget since last summer so that vital funds can be driven out to local schools, universities and hospitals. Thus far, the governor has not been receptive to any of our efforts.”
House Bill 1801 restores funding to many of the line items that the governor vetoed in December, including a $200 million funding increase for education. Additionally, the budget bill includes funding for major agriculture programs, such as the Penn State Agriculture Extension and 4-H Program, among others that are crucial to residents of the 108th District. State funding is also restored to child advocacy centers, critical access hospitals, regional cancer centers and burn centers under this legislation.
This budget plan spends $30.031 billion, which equates to a $872.6 million increase over 2014-15, about a 3 percent increase. This plan spends within revenues that are available and does not rely on new taxes.
