HARRISBURG – With the House of Representatives and Senate having passed
House Bill 1332 to require K-12 schools to post curricula online, the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Andrew Lewis (R-Dauphin), is encouraging Gov. Tom Wolf to quickly sign the measure into law.
“This curriculum transparency legislation would give parents easy access to research what their children will be taught in school. They should be able to get online morning or night to have access to the curriculum plan, including textbooks, and that plan should be updated online each time it is revised,” Lewis said.
Lewis introduced House Bill 1332 because he heard from parents who had no idea what was being taught until they saw their children’s homework. He wants the bill to be an example for other states to follow.
House Bill 1332 passed the House in October, the Senate on Monday and the House on a concurrence vote Wednesday. It would go into effect for the 2022-23 academic year.
To ensure the burden is not placed on teachers, Lewis supported a provision in the bill that requires a school administrator or designee to post the curricula online. The bill gives school entities 30 business days to update websites after changes in the curriculum plan.
