HARRISBURG, PA – Rep. Keith Gillespie (R-York) was elected chair of the Pennsylvania Delegation to the tri-state Chesapeake Bay Commission for 2022. Gillespie’s district includes several communities in eastern York County, part of an area identified as “Tier 1” for action under the Commonwealth’s plan to reduce nutrient and sediment pollution to the bay.
Gillespie has been a member of the commission since 2015. As Pennsylvania Delegation chair, he will serve as vice chair of the commission along with the Virginia Delegation chair, Sen. Lynwood Lewis. The commission chair for 2022 is Maryland Sen. Sarah Elfreth.
“While Pennsylvania has no bay shoreline, the Susquehanna River is the Chesapeake’s largest tributary, and it’s resources are enjoyed by countless citizens of the Commonwealth,” said Gillespie. “It is gratifying to work with the commission and my fellow legislators from the watershed to find common sense solutions to restore this national treasure. I am proud to be part of its leadership team.”
Sen. Scott Martin (R-Lancaster) was elected as the Vice Chair of the Pennsylvania Delegation. Other members of the Delegation include Sen. Gene Yaw (R-Bradford/Lycoming/Sullivan/Susquehanna/Union), Representative Johnathan Hershey (R-Mifflin/Juniata), Rep. Mike Sturla (D-Lancaster), Department of Environmental Protection Sec. Patrick McDonnell, and citizen member Warren Elliott of Chambersburg.
The Chesapeake Bay Commission is a policy leader in the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay. As a tri-state legislative body that advises the legislative branch of state government, its mission is to identify critical environmental needs, evaluate public concerns, and ensure state and federal actions to sustain the living resources of the Chesapeake Bay. The commission works directly with the state general assemblies and the U.S. Congress and is the only representative of the legislative branch within the Chesapeake Bay Program.
