HARRISBURG – Rep. Ryan Warner (R-Fayette/Westmoreland) issued the following statement in response to Gov. Tom Wolf’s budget proposal:

“Today, the governor presented his latest budget plan, which included more state government spending and higher taxes. The governor’s plan would expand the state Sales Tax, increase the Personal Income Tax paid by working Pennsylvanians and small businesses by 11 percent, and increase a list of other taxes paid by the middle class.

“As Yogi Berra once said, it was Deja Vu all over again.

“I’ve come to learn that only in Washington D.C. and Harrisburg are budgets built on what politicians want to spend, not based on what they have to spend. Government should operate no differently than we must operate within our household budgets. If we had credit card debt, we would pay it off by buckling down and eliminating unnecessary spending, not buying more. You cannot fix a deficit by spending more money, it just doesn’t make sense.

“The people in our district were very vocal throughout last year’s impasse: They expect a responsible budget that cuts wasteful spending, not one that raises their taxes.

“The answer to our budget shortfalls is to tighten our belts and spend within our means, not to grow government. Plain and simple, you cannot spend what you don’t have. We do not need higher taxes, we need commonsense budgeting.

“As we move forward in this year’s budget process, we must not fail to grasp that the decisions being made today not only impact our wallets, but also impact the inheritance we leave, or don’t leave, for our children and grandchildren. What we spend and borrow today will be on them to pay.”
