HARRISBURG - State Rep. Will Tallman (R-Adams/Cumberland) released the following statement in reaction to Gov. Tom Wolf’s partial veto of
House Bill 1460, the budget legislation passed last week by the General Assembly:
“I appreciate Gov. Wolf allowing some of the state funding to be released, especially money designated for schools and human service providers that have essentially been held hostage for nearly six months for completely avoidable reasons. It is a shame it took the governor this long to realize the error he made. Parents who feared their children’s schools would be closed this Monday when the holiday break ends can rest easy, as can individuals who depend on domestic violence and rape crisis centers for support in their time of need.
“The governor’s veto pen did do some damage. He vetoed 65 percent of the funding designated for the Department of Agriculture, which is unacceptable. He also made significant cuts to state correctional institutions that can ill afford to be underfunded.
“His answer to rectifying this continues to be tax increases for which the votes do not exist in the General Assembly. I could possibly understand if it happened once. But having your demands repeatedly voted down means it’s time to change course.
“The governor also continues to misrepresent state education funding efforts. He is using the myth of the Corbett education cuts as the basis for converting the proposed additional $405 million in public school funding into a $95 million cut. He must be using Common Core math to come up with that perception, inaccurate as it is.
“The governor had the chance today to pass a budget that spends what we have in a responsible fashion and meets Pennsylvania’s needs. He needs to come forward with something that has the votes necessary to pass both the House and Senate before heading to his desk.”
