HARRISBURG - Rep. Joe Kerwin (R-Dauphin/Schuylkill) released the following statement in reaction to the governor’s excessive spending plan:

“While I was disappointed to hear Gov. Tom Wolf call for increased spending in his annual budget address, I was not surprised. The governor’s budget address is an unrealistic proposal that increases spending and widens Pennsylvania’s deficit. The Independent Fiscal Office has stated that we could face a nearly $800 million deficit by 2023-24 as a result of this budget proposal.

“The governor’s desire to increase spending by over 16% or $6 billion is fiscally irresponsible and will leave the Commonwealth in dire economic condition. Put simply, his proposal will add over $1,000 of new spending for every Pennsylvanian. Pennsylvania will not be able to sustain this level of spending.

“Gov. Wolf has sought to substantially increase taxes and spending throughout his tenure in Harrisburg. I find it troubling he is so eager to raid the state’s fiscal reserve of over $2 billon. This is the healthiest financial reserve the Commonwealth has had in decades thanks to the leadership of the General Assembly. I look forward to working with my like-minded colleagues in the General Assembly to negotiate a budget that doesn’t increase spending or taxes and respects Pennsylvania families and businesses.”
