HARRISBURG – Rep. Craig Staats (R-Bucks) voted in favor of Senate Bill 1071, the Legislature’s attempt to address Pennsylvania’s public pension crisis. The bill failed by a 52-149 vote.
“Senate Bill 1071 would have shifted the risk from the taxpayer and it is an important step toward addressing the more than $50 billion unfunded pension liability. This change would have provided future state workers with a pension plan that is similar to those offered in the private sector,” said Staats.
This legislation would not impact current retirees, nor does it not impact benefits already earned by current employees.
“This bill would have saved $3.4 billion over 30 years, and would have brought our state’s pension program into the 21st century. While I feel that Senate Bill 1071 could have done more to address the pension problem, I voted in favor of it because it was a step in the right direction. I am disappointed – the House missed an opportunity to bring substantive change to the Commonwealth and to improve the financial future of our children and grandchildren.”
