HARRISBURG – As efforts continue to advocate for the safety of children, Rep. Rob Mercuri (R-Allegheny) wrote a letter urging the Wolf administration to swiftly implement
House Bill 1139, signed into law five years ago, which would allow parents to safely leave their child in the care of a hospital, police station or emergency services provider without being criminally liable.
“Life is sacred and must be protected by us all,” Mercuri said. “As a father of three truly amazing children, I am often reminded of the incredible blessing of parenthood, as well as its challenges. Raising young people of character in our families and communities is our greatest opportunity to preserve the future of our country and Commonwealth, and it is our most urgent responsibility.”
Recently, Mercuri was joined by several of his colleagues calling on the Wolf Administration to help parents in crisis by carrying out the Safe Haven Baby Policy. Mercuri said parents and newborn children deserve every opportunity for a hope-filled future without fearing for their well-being.
“Unfortunately for many families, this opportunity is being squandered by either the ineffectiveness or the unwillingness of the Pennsylvania Department of Health to implement the law by creating the required guidelines,” said Mercuri. “We must do better.”
“The time is now to create a policy pathway to enable this important legislation to create the hope and care for parents and families in crisis as designed,” said Mercuri. “We cannot, and must not, wait any longer. Our kids and our future require us to act.”
