HARRISBURG – Legislation introduced by Rep. Parke Wentling (R-Crawford/Erie/Lawrence/ Mercer) that would alleviate some of the financial burden facing public school districts as a result of this year’s extended budget impasse unanimously passed the House Education Committee this morning.
House Bill 1734 would extend the continuing professional education deadlines for public school teachers and administrators by one year.
In many instances, an educator’s employer pays for his or her continuing education requirements. Additionally, schools are required to produce three-year compliance plans to explain to the state when and how their employees will complete professional development courses. Further, public school teachers and administrators are mandated to take 180 hours of continuing professional education every five years or have their certifications listed as “inactive.”
The Wentling legislation would offer public schools, teachers and administrators a temporary reprieve until the fiscal climate improves.
“As a former teacher, I’ve completed many hours of continuing education, and I understand its importance,” said Wentling. “At the same time, I realize the challenging climate facing school district budgets during the current fiscal year. A one-year extension would offer immediate relief to school districts without compromising the overall professional development of educators.”
House Bill 1734 now moves to the House floor for further consideration.
