Dec. 09, 2015

HARRISBURG- Today, the Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility (Responsibility.org), a national not-for-profit organization funded by distillers that leads the fight to eliminate drunk driving and underage drinking, recognized state Rep. Keith J. Greiner (R-Lancaster) with its 2015 Leadership Award in recognition of his outstanding commitment to fighting drunk driving.

Greiner is the prime sponsor of House Bill 278, supported by Responsibility.org, which would require the use of ignition interlock devices for certain first time DUI offenders. This legislation would serve to reduce drunk driving across the Commonwealth. Ignition interlocks have the most potential to reduce recidivism when coupled with other effective interventions such as assessment and treatment. While all 50 states currently have some form of ignition interlock legislation, only 25 states have mandatory interlock provisions.

“I am humbled by this recognition from the Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility. All too often tragedies occur across Pennsylvania simply because someone decides to get behind the wheel of a vehicle after drinking. Ignition interlocks can save lives and be used as a rehabilitative tool that will significantly reduce repeat drunk driving offenses. There is still work to do, but together we can save lives by moving ignition interlock legislation forward.”

“Rep. Greiner has been a tireless advocate for the people of the 43rd Legislative District and has responded to recent tragedies in Lancaster County,” said Ralph Blackman, president and CEO of Responsibility.org. “We can’t thank the representative enough for his dedication and leadership to prevent drunk driving by sending a clear and consistent message that it is illegal and will not be tolerated. We look forward to expanding our relationship and continuing to collaborate with Rep. Greiner on this important issue.”

House Bill 278 and its companion legislation, Senate Bill 290, sponsored by state Sen. John Rafferty (R-44), are both being reviewed in the House Transportation Committee.
