HARRISBURG – David L. Reddecliff, Susquehanna Township, assumed the position of Chief Clerk of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives today when he was unanimously elected to the position by members of the House.
The oath of office was administered by House Speaker Mike Turzai, who spoke highly of Reddecliff’s character. “Dave is a gentleman of high moral character and someone with unimpeachable integrity,” Turzai said. “Dave will listen, he will be fair, and most of all he will be accountable to this august body and the taxpayers of Pennsylvania.”
Since the formation of the Colonial Assembly in 1682, only approximately 80 individuals have served as chief clerk, including Benjamin Franklin, who held the position for 14 years, and Thomas Paine, who served one year.
“I’m deeply honored and humbled that the members of the House have entrusted in me this unique responsibility of helping care for the people’s business,” Reddecliff said.
As chief clerk, Reddecliff is responsible for the daily operations of the House, including convening the House each term to elect the speaker and for the printing of all bills and House journals. His position falls under the jurisdiction of the Bipartisan Management Committee.
A graduate of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Reddecliff, raised in Conemaugh Township, Somerset County, began his tenure with the House in 1982, working in the 62nd Legislative District Office of State Rep. Paul Wass. A year later he moved to Harrisburg and began working as an analyst on the House Republican Conservation Committee under the chairmanship of Rep. George Hasay.
During his 33 years of service to the House, Reddecliff has worked for nearly every House Republican leadership office. He began with Caucus Administrator Harry Bowser, moved to Caucus Chairman Howard Fargo, then to Appropriations Chairman and Majority Whip Dave Argall, and finally served as Turzai’s director of administration.
During his floor remarks, Turzai noted that over the past five years Reddecliff has worked hard to cut costs and control spending within the House Republican Caucus, saving the caucus more than $8 million.
