Says House Bill 1460 doesn’t do enough to address fiscal deficit, fund schools
HARRISBURG – Rep. John Taylor (R-Philadelphia) today voted in opposition to
House Bill 1460, which was proposed as the answer to the current budget crisis. After the vote he issued the following statement:
“I believe House Bill 1460 takes us backward at a critical time.
“First of all, this budget bill fails to acknowledge the fiscal deficit we face in that the revenue plan that will accompany it only provides revenue for this fiscal year and leaves us $800 million short for next fiscal year, which we will be addressing in only a few short months. We need to recognize the fiscal deficit now. We need to deal with it now. It has been growing and gone unaddressed for far too long.
“The Senate’s budget plan, which passed that chamber Monday, is much more realistic in terms of solving our fiscal deficit and providing necessary school funding for Philadelphia. That plan also calls for a fair funding distribution formula that greatly benefits our schools and helps prevent the constant state of crisis that both the school funding issue and this budget funding issue have become.
“I strongly believe that the Senate version is the better plan and is better positioned to get us to a final resolution. It is still unclear what revenue package the Senate will pass to fund its spending plan, but I believe it will be better for Philadelphia than House Bill 1460. For these and other reasons, I was a no vote on House Bill 1460.
“I am looking forward to all sides agreeing to a set of bills that provides funding to put our state on a stable footing and provide needed funding for our schools.”
