HARRISBURG-- Rep. Martina White (R-Philadelphia) has called on Gov. Tom Wolf to direct the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) to release letters that would enable Commonwealth businesses to contribute money to students across the state and prevent the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program from being yet another casualty of the budget impasse.
The EITC program provides tax credits to businesses which make contributions to children in kindergarten through grade 12, organizations providing funding for innovative educational programs in public schools, and pre-kindergarten scholarship organizations offering scholarships to children enrolled in early learning programs.
When DCED releases the contribution letters, businesses are able to write checks for the education of Commonwealth children. If schools do not receive the money by Dec. 31, the businesses will be ineligible to dedicate money to the 2015 program and $150 million would be lost.
“The governor has the ability to ensure the EITC program continues to operate without interruption, yet he is refusing to release the funding,” White said. “It is unacceptable that the governor has the authority to release this money and is choosing not to help our children.”
