HARRISBURG – State Reps. Kate Klunk (R-Hanover) and Kristin Phillips-Hill (R-York Township) today joined colleagues from around the Commonwealth in demanding that Gov. Tom Wolf release education dollars to students and schools that benefit from the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program.

“The lack of a state budget should not threaten EITC, a program that allows local businesses to invest in their communities by providing educational choices to underprivileged students,” Phillips-Hill said. “Gov. Wolf has stated he believes money invested in EITC by these businesses is locked up as part of the budget process, when the legislation that created the program keeps it apart from General Fund spending.

“We’re asking the governor to release the funds immediately and not disrupt the lives of these students and families in need.”

EITC allows eligible business to essentially create scholarships that in turn offer students an alternative to public school that they may not otherwise be able to afford. The money is paid out to schools with the businesses receiving tax credits through the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED).

“DCED has the ability to approve these tax credits up to the level approved last year,” noted Klunk. “This would allow essential funds to reach charitable organizations in York County such as the Salvation Army and Hanover Foundation for Excellence in Education, as well as give schools like Logos Academy, Christian School of York and York Country Day the ability to provide scholarship aid to students with great financial need.”
