HARRISBURG – In a continued effort to prevent individuals from receiving public assistance from multiple states, the state House today voted in favor of House Bill 1322, being sponsored by Rep. Aaron Kaufer (R-Luzerne), to require applicants to disclose states in which they have previously received welfare benefits. The bill passed by a vote of 149-48.

“We have reports stating that the Commonwealth pays more than $5 million in out-of-state payments a month and we need to do something to address it,” Kaufer said. “This proposal is overdue to prevent double dipping and to ensure that our tax dollars are spent appropriately, helping those in need, not those taking advantage of the system.”

Current law states that the Public Welfare Code governs public assistance laws and policies in Pennsylvania; however, there are no laws requiring the Department of Human Services (DHS) to notify other states of the change in residency of applicants. House Bill 1322 would also require DHS to notify other states of the change in residency of the applicant.

“This proposal received bipartisan support in the House,” Kaufer explained. “I am very proud that my first bill to be passed in this chamber focuses on such an important issue that affects the people of Luzerne County, as well as the entire Commonwealth.”
