HARRISBURG – In her continuing effort to advocate for girls wrestling programs in Pennsylvania’s schools, Rep. Ann Flood (R-Northampton) this week
sent a letter to Robert Lombardi, executive director of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA), in support of the PIAA’s official sanctioning of the sport.
The letter was also signed by 70 other members of the House of Representatives and Senate who agree with Flood that young women should have the same opportunity as young men to compete on the wrestling mat.
“The momentum is building. A growing number of school districts statewide are approving girls wrestling programs. Another important step was taken when the PIAA awarded its ‘emerging sport status’ classification to the sport,” Flood wrote.
Flood also noted that 34 other states have recognized the value of sanctioning girls wrestling.
Pennsylvania is one of the most competitive wrestling states in the nation and it is high time the Commonwealth follows suit.
“These young women are more than ready to compete in PIAA-sanctioned matches. They have the support of their coaches, schools, parents, boosters and fans. They have our support. We hope they can continue to count on yours,” the letter concluded.
Since taking office in 2021, Flood has been working to build a broad coalition of supporters of her effort that includes scholastic female wrestlers, their parents and boosters, along with a growing number of state lawmakers.
