HARRISBURG – A concurrent resolution to extend the governor’s disaster emergency declaration related to the January bridge collapse in Pittsburgh until Sept. 30 was adopted by the House of Representatives today. House Resolution 188 now moves to the Senate for consideration.
“There is no question the bridge replacement project in Pittsburgh should move forward without interruption, and we are doing everything within our power in the General Assembly to ensure that happens,” said Boback.
Boback serves as majority chairman of the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness, which unanimously adopted the resolution on Monday.
House Resolution 188 is sponsored by the majority chairman of the House Transportation Committee, Rep. Tim Hennessey (R-Chester/Montgomery).
The Forbes Avenue/Fern Hollow Bridge collapse led Gov. Tom Wolf to declare a disaster emergency, which helps to ensure the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is eligible to receive emergency relief funding from the Federal Highway Administration. The current declaration, which was extended in February, is set to expire on March 31.
Under a constitutional amendment adopted by the Commonwealth’s voters last year, a governor’s disaster emergency declaration cannot exceed 21 days without the authorization of the General Assembly.
