HARRISBURG – Rep. Karen Boback (R-Lackawanna/Luzerne/Wyoming) is the prime sponsor of legislation to rename a portion of U.S. Route 11 in Luzerne County in memory of the late Rep. George Hasay.
House Bill 2068 passed unanimously in the House of Representatives today and will next be considered by the Senate.
“George Hasay was a loyal and civic-minded individual who dedicated his life to the care and devotion of serving others,” said Boback. “My intent with this proposal is to honor George for his service to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and the residents of the 117th Legislative District, which he represented so honorably for 34 years.”
Hasay died in February 2021 at the age of 73. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1972 when he was 23 years old. At that time, he was the youngest Pennsylvania state representative to ever serve. Hasay retired in 2006 and was succeeded by Boback.
Boback’s legislation would designate a portion of U.S. Route 11 in Shickshinny, also known as Main Street, from the intersection with Oak Street to the intersection of State Route 239, as the “Honorable George C. Hasay Memorial Highway.”
The bill also directs the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to erect and maintain appropriate signs displaying the new name of the highway in both directions.
