HARRISBURG – As majority chairman of the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, Rep. Steve Barrar (R-Chester/Delaware) commends Rep. Frank Farry (R-Bucks) on the signing of his bill that provides first responder organizations the opportunity to solicit donations at intersections. In September, the bill received support from the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee.

“This is commonsense legislation that will allow our first responders to generate some much-needed funding,” Barrar said. “Of course it isn’t safe for our children to collect donations at intersections, but our first responders are trained individuals who are experienced in conducting operations on highways. I’m glad that we were able to solidify an important funding stream for the men and women who keep us safe.”

Act 57 requires that the first responders obtain written permission from the municipality or PennDOT before soliciting donations at a stop sign or traffic signal. The first responders must wear traffic safety vests so they are fully visible to motorists.

“This is a vital fundraising tool, and I look forward to supporting my local first responder organizations when they are taking advantage of this opportunity,” Barrar said.
