HARRISBURG – Rep. Kathy Watson (R-Bucks/144th) today issued the following statement after the House voted down a plan by Gov. Tom Wolf to hike the state’s Personal Income Tax by 16 percent:
“I appreciate the fact that the governor has backed off an increase and expansion of the sales tax, which he has advocated for over the last few months and which was a non-starter in my book. But I am still strongly opposed to his 16 percent income tax increase, which has no widespread support of the residents I represent, and could further damage any positive gains in our economy.
“While I could have supported a reasonable severance tax on the natural gas industry, I am concerned that his proposal calls for the highest tax in the nation and could very well be passed along to consumers – the very same people paying more through an increased income tax.
“Sadly, on Day 99, we had to take this vote to show the governor that this type of tax increase – and the additional spending he wants to go along with it – doesn’t have the support of the General Assembly. I am hopeful the governor realizes that he must take a new approach and understand that his wish list is too expensive for people across Pennsylvania. However, I am still eager to work with the governor to find additional revenue sources to pay our bills and move forward.”
